kurodani-unryu-byakko-001
Pure White（White)/High Quality

About the Product

Kyoto "Kurotani Washi" x Kyoto "Wagasa-ya Tsujikura"
Traditional crafts preserved and nurtured through a long history.
Kurotani Washi, from the papermaking village of Ayabe in Kyoto, is a very rare Japanese paper where every single sheet is handcrafted by artisans.
It is characterized by being strong and durable, and because it can withstand long-term preservation, it is used for the restoration of cultural assets.
Skilled Tsujikura artisans took the time to carefully craft a Janome(Snake Eye) umbrella using this rare Kurotani Unryu-shi (cloud dragon paper).
From the raw materials to the final product, we have focused on true authenticity.
While there is no outward flashiness, the simplicity of this product is its true charm.
"Kurotani Unryu-shi" -Byakko (White Tiger)- is a masterpiece of the highest quality.

Each Charm - Feel the Wagasa
• The shaft (handle) is made of Metake (arrow bamboo). The texture when gripped is smooth and fits comfortably in the hand. Although Metake has "bamboo" in its name, it is technically a member of the Sasa (shrub bamboo) family.
• When closed, the umbrella returns to the slender and beautiful form of the original single piece of Madake bamboo.
• The Kozo (mulberry) fibers of the Unryu-shi appear translucent when held up to the light.
*Unryu-shi is a type of paper where long fibers of hand-torn Kozo (mulberry) are scattered across the base paper to create cloud-like patterns.
• The color of the Washi changes over time.
Vegetable oils such as linseed oil and perilla oil are applied for a waterproof finish. Due to the characteristics of these oils, the white Washi gradually changes from pale yellow to a flaxen color as the years pass. This process of color change is one of the joys of owning this Wagasa.
• The crisp, crackling sound of the folded Washi layers separating one by one when opening the umbrella.
• For the latch that determines how far the umbrella opens, we have used a "Hajiki" made of wood rather than metal. The "click" of the wooden latch provides a pleasant and soothing resonance.

We deliver this ultimate masterpiece, a collaboration between "Kyoto Kurotani Washi" and "Kyoto Wagasa-ya Tsujikura."

≪Kurotani Washi: The Papermaking Village of Ayabe, Kyoto≫
The number of Washi artisans has continued to decline with the changing times, and now there are fewer than ten. However, most are in their 30s and 40s, and the production area remains very vibrant. While preserving the traditional "hand-smelted" techniques that have lasted for over 800 years, efforts are also being made to develop new products and strengthen the local brand.

◆ Regarding the Color Change of Washi
Rain umbrellas are treated with vegetable oil on the surface of the Washi for waterproofing. Therefore, due to the nature of the oil, the color will change from pale yellow to flaxen over time. White Wagasa, in particular, gain depth and develop a seasoned, flavorful color the more they are used. This does not affect the strength of the Wagasa. We hope you enjoy the unique characteristics of these natural materials.

Specifications: Rain Umbrella
Material: Kyoto Kurotani handmade Unryu-shi (waterproofed)
Color: White
Bone: Madake Bamboo (Transparent finish)
Stretchers: 44
Shaft: Metake (Arrow Bamboo)
Latch: Wood
Length: About 74cm (about 29.1inch)
Diameter: About 105cm (about 41.3inch)
Decorative Thread: White
Kappa (Head cover): Double waterproof cloth

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0590/1660/9903/files/E8_9B_87_E7_9B_AE_E3_83_BB_E9_BB_92_E8_B0_B7_E9_9B_B2_E7_AB_9C_E3_83_BB_E7_99_BD_E7_8B_901_943868a9-09c5-4e29-8c9c-fc2cde25b30f.jpg?v=1726201109
